Monsterman Duathlon on 04 January 2006

Monsterman 1 (of 4) turned into a battle against humility and the elements. Mother Nature proved yet again that training snatched in a lunch hour is no rival to that of a high-miling student triathlete but what would I give to run sub 35 minutes again? Certainly not a wife and daughter and, besides, who needs hours spent on foot when a shorter than advertised run leg does enough work to flatter your time?
The course - a flat run and largely unchallenging bike section - was just what was needed. The run weighed down cold legs with sticky mud, while the cycle coupled easy overtaking on the unpaved roads with some twisty single track and a mix of slippery uphills, before shooting back to the start / finish line on a paved road for 3 more laps. The circular format of the final run allowed you to keep an eye out for your rivals; not that my tired legs would have been able to do anything about them but it was nicer to (almost) die knowing.
35th position from a field of 70ish was not bad. Disheartening that the legs don't work as well as they used to, but we got there. Another victory for Gore-Tex socks, though: outstanding pieces of kit and my feet were almost too warm on the second run.
