As if the current Ashes series couldn't get any more exciting, the increased popularity of cricket futures has aroused great interest in the office. Even the French are getting involved: under the guise of an introduction to financial markets, the concept of a spread-based futures market was introduced and, so it seemed, grasped quite quickly.
The rules of cricket may take a bit longer, but at least a lesson in volatility was learned - albeit at some personal cost to the student.
Some might say that the additional consideration of futures make the game all the more complicated but it's been a great way of teaching some abstract concepts. Some more so than others, it has to be said - a colleague was packed off to the Lords test with the instruction to hide the umpire's deodorant. Success as only one wide ball was signalled and a collective sigh of relief was felt across the office, followed by more selling of the wide market. An introduction to mis-pricing - or so we hope.
The news that Brett Lee may be unavailable for the second test could prove fruitful if another spinner is brought into the attack, but I for one will welcome the return of old metronome himself. Hopefully sometime around the 5th test, once we've secured the series
